Fox Adoption accepts unsolicited submissions year-round and publishes one piece each week. Please review our submission guidelines below before submitting pieces.
Already familiar with our guidelines? Feel free to head straight to our submission form.
Fox Adoption claims First North American Serial Rights. All other rights revert back to the owner upon publication. We also claim Non-Exclusive Digital Rights, which allows us to keep pieces published on our website for an indefinite period of time. After initial publication you’re free to publish your work anywhere else, but we do ask that you mention its original publication here at Fox Adoption.
We encourage simultaneous submissions. Our goal is to get back to you as soon as we can, but it can still take time, so feel free to get your work out there. All we ask is that you let us know if any of your pieces were accepted somewhere else before we get a chance to look at them.
We will not accept previously published work. This includes works published in other literary magazines (online or print) as well as works published on personal sites.
At this time, Fox Adoption is unable to pay our contributors with anything but our enthusiasm. We hope that’s enough for now!
You may submit pieces to one category every four months (i.e. poetry in April, then photographs in August).
You may submit up to five poems at a time. Please single space all poems. Let us know if there are any specific formatting requirements.
We are open to all types of poetry, though we will admit that we’re slightly biased against longer poems. If it’s more than a page, make sure we can’t stop reading it.
You may submit up to five pieces of prose or up to 5,000 words, whichever is less. Please double space all prose pieces.
We accept short stories, flash fiction, creative nonfiction, and essays – we’re even willing to give plays a chance.
Please note: If you have a single piece that is more than 5,000 words, query us. We may still accept it.
You may send up to five photographs or scans of your artwork, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures. If you’re submitting a complete set, we’re willing to waive the limit, but please query us first.
Please note: If you’re submitting a collaborative piece, please also list the names and roles of everyone involved. The work will be published under the name of whoever submitted the piece, but credit will be given to everyone involved.
Fox Adoption is always interested in art, regardless of the form. If you’ve got something you think we’d like to see, read, hear, or enjoy in some other fashion, please send us an email with a brief description. We’ll let you know if we’re interested in having you submit it.
How to Submit
We prefer to receive submissions through our submission form.
For submissions, please upload each piece as its own individual file. Please be sure the piece is identifiable by its filename. For poems and prose, use .doc, .docx, or .pdf files. For photographs and artwork, use .png or .jpg files.
If you have additional comments or if you’re submitting a collaborative piece, please include them in the “Additional Comments” box of the form.
We will also accept pieces through email at [email protected].
If you choose to submit through email, please include:
- your full name
- your email address
- the titles of all submitted pieces
- a brief (50 words or less), third-person biography
- a link to your website/portfolio/blog, if applicable
- any additional comments
- each piece as an individual attachment
In the subject of your email, please include your last name and the category that you are submitting to (ex. “DeGrasse-Baumann – Poetry”).
