Young Girl Swimming

Here in the lake’s
    deep water
green in reflection
  of summer trees

a girl swims
    her long, firm
         arms describing
                    light brown

parabola
     as she plows
the smooth surface.
         At this distance

she seems to move
    in silence
         a shining vessel
       filled with a darkness

of her own, still
    and buried
         beneath the water’s
              skin

dark reeds bobbing
    and curling
              as if they felt
    a different kind

of wind
    blowing
         from caves
lined with diamonds, pearl, and gold.
